Thesis: John Calvin Stevens

2019, Digital

I moved to Portland in 2015, and immediately fell in love with the way I could feel the history of the city through its architecture. Over the course of three devastating fires, Portland again and again rose through the ashes like a phoenix. Influential in the rebirth of the city was architect John Calvin Stevens. Stevens is responsible for hundreds of structures throughout New England, most of which stand along the coast of Maine. With my thesis, I am exploring his work along the Portland Peninsula, focusing on buildings that I have built strong connections to. Whether it be my favorite used book store, a house that brightened rainy days on long walks home, or the steps of City Hall that I frequented to sit and sketch on, each structure in this group is intricately woven into the fabric of the city, and me.
